Looking for a Sure Thing

The word “guarantee” is a bit of a wide-ranging and weighty word. It has behind it a requirement of trust and integrity. If you recently purchased any appliance, device, or vehicle, then you hold your breath when there is a glitch that the manufacturer will stand behind the guarantee that comes with the product. It is a word that should give us confidence and some peace of mind.

Many places try to assure us that they can guarantee their work or their product. Isn’t it interesting that those who say they have a sure-fire, guaranteed product or process also offer us extended warranties just in case something goes wrong? (I thought a guarantee meant nothing could go wrong.)

Some of you can flash back to something that you were told when you were younger. Maybe it was a warning. Maybe it was just some solid wisdom passed down from those who are ahead of us. Or maybe it was just flat-out truth. Many of us have been told, “There are no guarantees!” “The only sure thing is that there is no sure thing.” Those who told us that will guarantee it.

The FDIC tries to guarantee our money, but only to a certain limit. The NFL players try to sign guaranteed contracts, but there always seems to be a way out of it in the small print. I have even been to Greer’s grocery store to pick up only one item, and they did not have it in stock. That was surprising, especially since their slogan is “Greer’s got it. I guarantee it!”.

If you want something that is truly guaranteed, then I can only think of one statement that I have full confidence in. No, it is not that you have the smartest Pastor in America. (Hey, I heard those of you who just laughed!) The only guaranteed truth that I can give you is that God is going to do what He has said! He is faithful. He is true. He is trustworthy. And, just as He says in Jeremiah 1:12, He “watches over His word to accomplish it.” If God said it, then it is guaranteed to happen! Let’s make sure we build our life on His guaranteed Word. I look forward to seeing you soon at GSBC!
