Government Street Baptist Church Leadership
Government Street Baptist Church is blessed to have a leadership team who are truly dedicated to Christ and accomplishing His will. Following are brief bio's of our leadership team and their qualifications for ministry.
Scotty Jernigan
Senior Pastor
Pastor Scotty is a native Mobilian. After graduating from Shaw High School, he went on to receive degrees from Mobile College (now the University of Mobile) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX. In 1990, he married his wife Stephanie, a graduate of the University of South Alabama. They have been blessed with 3 children: Rachel, Carter, and Sophie.
Scotty and Stephanie have served churches in Texas, South Carolina, and Alabama. When not attending church related functions, they enjoy the beach, traveling, fishing, and Alabama football. Pastor Scotty’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 3:14, a verse that reminds us that in following Jesus the best is yet to come!
Deborah Smith
Minister of Education & Administration
Deborah has served as GSBC’s Minister of Education & Administration since November 2023. As Minister of Education, her main focus is discipleship, and she desires to see the lost go from death to life, while also developing mature believers in the faith who boldly go and make disciples.
Deborah is originally from Grand Bay and received a Bachelor of Arts in History, with a minor in Studio Art, from the University of South Alabama. After college, she moved to Texas, where she received a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.
While in Texas, Deborah also served as the Associate Minister of Students at Church at the Cross in Grapevine and served as the Lead Ministry Assistant to the Associate Executive Director of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention.
This Bama-born, Texas-loving baseball fan loves spending time with her family and friends and will rarely turn down an opportunity for sushi.

Among his favorite quotes is that of John Calvin, “There is no knowing that does not begin with knowing God.”
Bryan has been married to Anita for 37 years and has two sons and two grandchildren. His interests are reading and studying the Bible, History, classic literature, and writing. He enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife and family.
Deborah Eddie
CDC Director
Deborah Eddie joined Government Street Baptist Child Development Center in December of 2013, and officially began serving as the Director in December of 2015. As the wife of a now retired US Coast Guardsman, she has had the opportunity to serve for over 30 years in various forms of childcare including daycares, youth centers, and churches.
She holds a Bachelor of Social Work with a minor in Child/Adolescent Psychology from Louisiana College and is an American Red Cross certified instructor for Adult/Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED and continues to receive various certificates in Early Childhood Education each year.
Deborah has been married to her husband David since 1988, and they have two grown children that she homeschooled and have both found success in their chosen fields - their daughter in Birmingham, AL, and their son in Houston, TX.
The verse that Deborah learned to sing as a child serves as a daily motto for her: Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Deborah loves serving in this ministry and being part of what God has in store for the CDC at Government Street Baptist Church.
Tracie Collier

Tracie began working at GSBC in December of 2018 as the front desk receptionist/administrative assistant, and then transitioned to the Pastor’s administrative assistant in January 2022. She graduated from the University of Mobile in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre.
Tracie is a native Mobilian who graduated from Theodore High School and currently enjoys living in Midtown with her dog, Max, and caring for her mother, Sarah. She also enjoys singing and leading the Sr. Adult Prayer & Praise every other Tuesday. Her desktop background is Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart,” and she is grateful the Lord planted her at GSBC.
Debbie Wooldridge
Financial Secretary
Debbie Wooldridge has been a member of Government Street Baptist Church since it was “West End Baptist.” She became acquainted with the church when Government Street Christian School came into existence. It was there she received Christ, was baptized, and became a member. Debbie graduated with honors, received a full scholarship, and attended the University of Mobile. She was blessed to have such a start in life.
In 2023, Debbie accepted the position of finance secretary. It was also during this time, she discovered it truly takes a “village” for everything to run smoothly.
Her heart is full when she says it is a blessing to be a part of something that is so much bigger than a job and feels honored to be working with the ministry staff, directors, teachers, little ones, students, and most of all, our wonderful members.
Debbie is thankful to God for knowing her heart and putting her where He knew she needed to be.
“May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it, and may you be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (Ephesians 3:16)
