In this sermon, Pastor Scotty continues the study of Romans by focusing on how to stand firm on solid ground during uncertain times. He explains that by following the "umbrella" of sincere love, believers can walk steady through difficulties, unexpected attacks, and everyday responsibilities.
Submission to Authority: Drawing from Romans 13, the message highlights that all authority is ultimately established by God. Living according to the law allows for a clear conscience and freedom from fear. This includes meeting our "payouts"—paying taxes, giving respect, and showing honor to those in leadership, even when it is difficult.
The Debt of Love: While financial debts should be settled, there is a "continuing debt" to love one another that is never fully paid. Sincere love is described as the fulfillment of the law because it does no harm to a neighbor and sums up commandments like not stealing or coveting.
The Urgency of the Moment: Every day we wake up, we are "one day closer to eternity" than we were before. This reality should serve as a wake-up call to put aside "deeds of darkness" and instead "clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ," focusing on His strength rather than selfish desires.
Core Truths for Living:
- Obedience as a Love Language: There is no true love for God without obedience. Just like trying to shortcut chores or "cheat" during a game of Uno, manipulating the rules moves us out of the flow of God's blessings.
- Making Time Count: Because time is short, every moment is an opportunity to share the Gospel. The goal is to live so authentically that when someone needs to find God, you are the first person they think to call.
- Being Found "Guilty": Believers should strive to be "guilty" of obeying God in every arena of life—whether at school, work, home, or in the community.
Sincere Love in Action: To make a difference, we have to be different. This means stepping out of our comfort zones to serve in "hard places." A practical example of this is the church's upcoming mission to serve at the local high school concession stand, showing the community what sincere, Christ-like love looks like in practice.
