How Big Is Your God?
As a child, I used to love playing with a magnifying glass. I would take it and look at things up close to see the details that weren’t always easy to see without the help of the magnifier. I would look at bugs, leaves, my skin, and anything else that stirred my curiosity. I also found delight in using the magnifying glass to burn leaves by harnessing the sunlight into a finely focused area.
In Psalm 34:3, we are invited with the psalmist to “magnify the Lord.” I was reminded of something recently: There are a couple of types of magnification. There is microscopic magnification and telescopic magnification. Microscopic magnification (using a microscope) makes a small thing look bigger than it is. Telescopic magnification (using a telescope) makes a big thing begin to look as big as it really is.
The psalmist is not inviting us to do our best to make a small God look big. Rather, he is inviting us to make our big, Almighty, unmatched, without-equal God look as big as He really is!! This reminder has greatly impacted my personal prayer life and my worship of the One True God. It has also challenged me to make sure that my actions match my declarations of my faith. I am blessed to have the opportunity to act, pray, and worship in such a way that it displays God as big as He really is.
An amazing thing happens when I magnify God telescopically. My problems, my fears, my anxieties, my worries, my doubts, my earthly desires begin to look so infinitely, microscopically small when I choose to worship, exalt, and magnify God. (And boisterous braggards become as small as they truly are!).
Do you remember the song, “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands”? I believe that song to be true. And, for that to be true, He must be a great, big God! Let’s not settle for a little, limited God who needs our help. I promise you--He does not need you. But He will gladly dwell with you when you magnify Him and minimize everything else. I look forward to seeing you soon at GSBC as we join to be telescopes with our worship and magnify God!
